Time is the twenty-sixth (assuming read left to right) skill in the Welsh language tree. In this skill, with a total of four lessons, you will learn more about how to tell time.
Grammar Notes[]
Vigesimal system[]
The vigesimal system in Welsh is slowly being replaced by the decimal system, but time is still often given with this system.
The vigesimal system is given in powers of 20; these are the first 20 numbers. Note that ar ("on") causes lenition in the following word:
Number | Welsh Number | Number | Welsh Number |
---|---|---|---|
1 | un | 11 | un ar ddeg |
2 | dau/dwy | 12 | deuddeg |
3 | tri/tair | 13 | tri/tair ar ddeg |
4 | pedwar/pedair | 14 | pedwar/pedair ar ddeg |
5 | pump | 15 | pymtheg/pymtheng* |
6 | chwech | 16 | un ar bymtheg |
7 | saith | 17 | dau ar bymtheg |
8 | wyth | 18 | deunaw |
9 | naw | 19 | pedwar ar bymtheg |
10 | deg/deng* | 20 | ugain |
* The extra "n" in these words is a traditional spelling; you can choose which spelling is more convenient for you.
