The News is the sixty-third (assuming read left to right) skill in the language tree for Welsh. In this skill, you will learn how to use the passive voice in Welsh while using vocabulary from news reports. The skill has five lessons.

Grammar Notes[]

Welsh has no natural passive voice, so one was invented using the verb cael ("to get") in the right tense. Using the simple past tense of cael and the correct possessive pronoun for the object, a past passive is formed:

  • Gaeth gar ei ddwyn = A car was stolen. (literally "A car had its stealing")

As you might remember, after ei (for she)/eu an h- is added to verbs beginning in a vowel:

  • Gaeth y gwraig ei harestio = The woman was arrested.

To add a subject, just use the preposition gan ("with"):

  • Gaethon ni ein arestio gan y heddlu = We were arrested by the police
