Past: Gwneud is the fourteenth skill in the language tree for Welsh. It has five lessons and teaches the verb gwneud in the past tense.
Grammar Notes[]
Gwneud (which means "to make/do") is another of the four major irregular verbs in Welsh in the past tense:
English | Welsh |
---|---|
I made | Gwnes i |
You made | Gwnest ti |
He/She made | Gwnaeth e/o/hi |
We made | Gwnaethon ni |
You made | Gwnaethoch chi |
They made | Gwnaethon nhw |
Remember that any objects that immediately come after a verb in the past tense (no y, no prepositions) will be affected by soft mutation:
- Mi wnes i ginio ddoe. = I made dinner yesterday (instead of cinio)
Soft mutation also occurs after o as with llawer o ("a lot/lots of") and after i. It also affects the beginning of gwneud in questions or in negative statements (along with ddim):
- Gwnes i frecwast. -> Wnes i frecwast? -> Wnes i ddim brecwast.
