Possessive is the ninth skill in the Turkish language tree. It has three lessons and teaches how to express "my", "our", and "your" in Turkish, as well as give your name and an introduction to the third case, the genitive case.

Grammar Notes[]

The Possessive Suffix[]

When you "have" an object in Turkish, you use the genitive case and a possessive suffix to indicate this. Let's see the suffix first. This suffix is added to end of the object being possessed. The suffix will depend on who "owns" the object.

Singular Plural
1st person -(I)m -(I)mIz
2nd person -(I)n -(I)nIz
3rd person -(s)I -(s)I

The "I's" are added if the last letter is a consonant, and the "s's" are added if the last letter is a vowel. This is the case whether the object that is being owned is singular or plural.

The Genitive Case[]

The genitive case uses some new pronouns and adds an ending to any noun that owns an object.

  • Ben -> Benim
  • Sen -> Senin
  • O -> Onun
  • Biz -> Bizim
  • Siz -> Sizin
  • Onlar -> Onların

For objects, the suffix -(n)In) is used, with the extra -n- added if the last letter is a vowel.

To Have[]

Although there is a verb "to have" in Turkish, most people just use X (in genitive) + Y (with possessive suffix) + var (have) or yok (don't have).
