Grammar Notes[]
Past Tense + "To Be"[]
The past tense of "to be" is indicated with another suffix: -DI-. It goes between the verb stem and the personal suffix (if there is one). The personal suffixes are also slightly different as well:
Pronoun | Suffix |
---|---|
ben | -m |
sen | -n |
o | -X |
biz | -k |
siz | -nIz |
onlar | -lAr |
- Mutluyum. ("I am happy") -> Mutluydum. ("I was happy")
- Bıçak biraz yeşil. ("The knife is a little bit green") -> Bıçak biraz yeşildi. ("The knife was a little bit green")
Note: if the stem ends in a vowel and it is not first person, an extra -y- is added between the stem and the -DI- suffix.
- "This was a castle" -> Bu bir kaleydi
Past Tense with Other Verbs[]
The past tense with other verbs follows the personal endings and suffixes outlined above, except for the extra -y-.
