If is the fifty-ninth skill (assuming read left to right) in the Turkish language tree. It has a total of two lessons and teaches how to use the conditional mood in Turkish to express things that "would" happen.
Grammar Notes[]
To put it simply, in Turkish you use the -sA- particle for conditional verbs, and they can be introduced by the word eğer, "if". But the tense of the verb still matters, and can create some interesting combinations. This is by no means an exhaustive list:
Simple Conditional[]
This one refers to events that could happen right now. This tense is the most common and the one used the most:
- Stem + sA + past endings = if I were to...
Habitual Conditional[]
You can also use the aorist verb stem if the aorist would normally apply instead of the usual one:
- Aorist stem (no endings) + sA + aorist endings = if I...
Intentional[]
If the action hasn't happened yet, but you intend to do it in the future, you can use either the future tense or (if there's doubt about whether you'll do it or not) this tense:
- Stem + AcAk + sA + past endings = If I...(something in the future)
Present Continuous Conditional[]
Another common conditional tense, this one is used for events that could be happening right now.
- Stem + Iyor + sA + past endings = If I were doing...
Past Conditional[]
If you did something in the past, then you can use either this one (if the event in question was likely) or the the past unreal conditional (if it was unlikely), which is introduced with keşke instead of eğer:
- Stem + DI + ysA + past endings = real (if I did...)
- Stem + sA + yDI + past endings = unreal (if only I did...)
