Grammar Notes[]

When to use Buenos Días and Buenas Tardes[]

In English, we say "good morning", which is followed by "good afternoon", and then by "good evening". In Spanish, you only can say buenos días and buenas tardes. In English, you might say "good afternoon" after 12:00 AM, but in casual Spanish, people might say buenos días until lunch time, at 2 PM, and then will say buenas tardes, but if you talk to a professor, they might correct you to use buenas tardes if it is after 12:00 AM. Therefore, it is mostly okay to say buenos días in an informal conversation at 1:00 PM, but it is not in a formal conversation.

Tardes and Noches[]

In English, "afternoon" comes before "evening," which in turn comes before "night." In Spanish there are only two words that cover these times of the day. The word tarde means "afternoon," but overlaps with "evening," Similarly, the word noche, which means "night", also overlaps with "evening." Therefore, at 6:30pm it is OK to say either buenas tardes or buenas noches.
