Verbs: Motion is the forty-sixth (assuming read left to right) skill in the Russian language tree. This skill has six lessons, and teaches how the Russian system of motion verbs work.
Grammar Notes[]
Russian verbs of motion come in two varieties: unidirectional and multidirectional. These are not indicated in the lessons themselves but they have been indicated below.
Unidirectional[]
- going to or from one place for one time and/or
- used along with a по- prefix to indicate a perfective aspect to the movement, uni- or multidirectional.
Multidirectional[]
- general movement;
- going to one place and returning; and
- repeated trips to/from a place.
If a verb of motion is used in perfective aspect, it's multidirectional meaning is lost, and thus, "по" or any other prefix is added in the beginning of the verb in its unidirectional form. For example:
- ездить/ехать (Imperfective) —> поехать (Perfective)
- уходить (Imperfective) —> уйти (Perfective)
You do not form "поездить", as any multidirectional verb has general meanings, and thus, does not satisfy the requirements for a perfective verb (e.g. no intention to finish an action)
