Plurals is the sixth (assuming read left to right) skill in the language tree for Russian. It has a total of four lessons. Pluralization of nouns in Russian is the major theme, but a few new words are learned.

Grammar notes[]

Russian has two ways of pluralizing nouns; -а/-я and -ы/-и.

This one is used when the noun is neuter (ends in -о/-е) or rarely in other cases. The ending is -а when the -а would follow a hard consonant and -я when it follows a soft one.

This ending follows nouns ending in consonants (masculine nouns) or feminine nouns (ending in -а/-я). Similar to the above, the ending after a hard consonant is -ы and -и after a soft one.

EXCEPT a spelling rule overthrows this entire system when the consonant is к, ш, щ, х, ц, г, ж, or ч. If this is the case, the plural ending must be -и, and the letter after the consonant in other words changes too. Г, к, and х can only be followed by -а for an "ah" sound, -у for an "ooh" sound, -и for the "ee" sound, and the "yuh" sound is from an -е and the "uh" from an -о. The first three apply for ш, щ, ч, and ж, and ц can only be followed by the last two. If you can keep this rule in mind, spelling in Russian will be much, much easier!
