Numbers is the sixteenth skill of the Russian language tree. It has 3 lessons.

This skill teaches the numbers from one to four and how to use them with nouns.

Grammar Notes[]

Numbers: 1 to 4[]

In general, Russian numbers cause a change in the declension of the noun that follows them, and this change depends on the number that is used. In this unit, we will only see the numbers from один (1) to четыре (4), and only when used in the following cases:

  • In the Nominative case (i.e. as a descriptor of the subject of a sentence)
  • In the Accusative case for Masculine Inanimate and Neuter nouns (that is identical to the Nominative case, as seen in the previous skill).
Numbers: 1 to 4
Number Russian number Case of the following noun Example
1 and numbers that end in 1 (except 11) один nominative singular один брат
2, 3, 4 and numbers that end in 2, 3, 4 (except 12, 13, 14) два, три, четыре genitive singular два брата, три яблока, четыре кошки

So, for example, we have:

  • [Russian form] → [literal translation] → [meaning]
  • два братаtwo of brother → two brothers
  • три яблокаtwo of apple → two apples

один and два[]

The numbers один (1) and два (2) have different forms depending on the gender of the noun they refer to.

1 один одна одно
2 два две два

So, for example:

  • один брат = one brother
  • одна кошка = one cat
