Grammatical Genders[]

All nouns in Norwegian have a grammatical gender: masculine, feminine, neuter. In this skill, you will learn about masculine nouns. Neutral nouns are explained in Norwegian Skill:Restaurant, Feminine nouns are explained in detail in Norwegian Skill:Feminine.

Masculine Feminine
en far en mor or ei mor

All feminine nouns in Norwegian (hytte, jente, kvinne, mor, etc.) can take a masculine indefinite article.

"The" in Masculine[]

How to say 'The' in Norwegian is easy. In most cases, the grammatical gender is -en for masculine. How to form the definite article form of a neuter noun is explained in detail in Norwegian Skill:Restaurant.

  • søster + -en = søsteren
  • bror + -en = broren

Verbs[]

Most present tense verbs in Norwegian end in -r.

Possessives[]

All possessive adjectives go after the noun and the noun is in definite form.

  • Broren min er veldig smart. - My brother is very smart.
