Basics 1 is the 4th skill (assuming read left to right) in the Korean language course. It has 4 lessons and teaches how to form some simple Korean sentences.

Grammar notes[]

In these lessons, you learn how to form verbs and nouns using particles. For example,

  • ~이다 is the dictionary form of to be.

Lesson 1[]

  • 여자 (yeoja) = woman
  • 남자 (namja) = man
  • 와 (wa) = and (used after a vowel and commonly used when writing)
  • 과 (gwa) = and (used after a consonant and commonly used when writing)
  • 또는 (ttoneun) = or
  • 들 (deul) - plural marker
  • 남자들 (namjadeul) = men
  • 여자들 (yeojadeul) = women

  • 빵 (bbang) = bread
  • 책 (chaek) = book
  • 사과 (sagwa) = apple
  • 학교 (hakgyo) = school
  • 집 (jip) = house, home
  • 연필 (yeonpil) = pencil
  • 하고 (hago) = and (commonly used when speaking)

Lesson 3[]

  • 는 (neun) = topic marker, used after a vowel e.g. 여자는 - A woman. Used when making a general statement e.g. An apple is a fruit.
  • 은 (eun) = topic marker, after a consonant e.g. 연필은 - A pencil.
  • 가 (ga) = Subject marker, used after a vowel e.g. 학교가 - The school
  • 이 (i) = Subject marker, used after a consonant e.g. 연필이 - The pencil. Used when you're talking about something specific e.g. The pencil is a thing.
  • 입니다 (imnida) = am/is/are
  • 물건 (mulgeon) = thing
  • 사람 (saram) = person/people
  • 음식 (eumsik) = food
  • 장소 (jangso) = place
  • 네 (ne) = yes
  • 예 (ye) = yes

  • 고양이 (goyangi) = cat
  • 개 (gae) = dog
  • 동물 (dongmul) = animal
  • 남자아이 (namja-ai) = boy
  • 여자아이 (yoja-ai) = girl
  • 소녀 (sonyeo) = girl
  • 저 (jeo) = I
  • 제 (je) = I
  • 아닙니다 (animnida) = am/is/are not
  • 아니요 (aniyo) = no
  • 의 (ui) = of (indicates possession)
