The counter 〜名 for people falls in the level of honorifics called 丁寧語, a respectful language that can be used by/for anyone without regards to status. So technically, this could be used by both the person working at the hotel and the person making the reservation.[1]

Lesson 1[]

  • 宿 (ya-do) = inn
  • 温泉 (on-sen) = hot spring
  • 温泉宿 (on-sen-ya-do) = hot spring resort
  • チェックイン (che-kku-in) = check-in
  • チェックインした (che-kku-in-shi-ta) = I checked-in
  • 名 (mei) = (counter for people)
  • 何名様ですか?(nan-mei-sa-ma-de-su-ka) = How many people?
  • 四名様ですね。(yon-mei-sa-ma-de-su-ne) = Four people, right?
  • 三名で予約をしたいんですが。(san-mei-de-yo-ya-ku-wo-shi-ta-in-de-su-ga) = I would like a reservation for three people.
  • 有名 (yū-mei) = famous ("有" [yǒu] means 'to have' in Mandarin. Therefore 有名 means 'to have name'.)
  • 今夜は泊まる宿がありません。(kon-ya-wa-to-ma-ru-ya-do-ga-a-ri-ma-sen) = We have nowhere to stay tonight. ("Tonight, there is no staying inn.")
  • よかったら今夜はうちに泊まってもいいですよ。(yo-ka-tta-ra-kon-ya-wa-u-chi-ni-to-ma-tte-mo-ī-de-su-yo) = You can stay with us tonight if you would like to.

Lesson 2[]

  • 和室 (wa-shi-tsu) = Japanese-style room
  • 八十号室は和室です。(ha-chi-jū-gō-shi-tsu-wa-wa-shi-tsu-de-su) = Room 80 is a Japanese-style room. ('80' used as an adj. here)
  • 休暇 (kyū-ka) = vacation ("body time")
  • 彼らは休暇でメキシコにいた。(ka-re-ra-wa-kyū-ka-de-me-ki-shi-ko-ni-i-ta) = They were in Mexico for a vacation.
  • 一泊 (i-ppa-ku) = per night / one night
  • じゃあ、和室で二泊お願いします。(jā-wa-shi-tsu-de-ni-ha-ku-o-ne-gai-shi-ma-su) = Well then, two nights for the Japanese-style room please.
  • 名古屋で三泊した。(na-go-ya-de-sam-pa-ku-shi-ta) = I spent three nights in Nagoya. ("I did three nights in Nagoya.")
  • このホテルは一泊四万円です。(ko-no-ho-te-ru-wa-i-ppa-ku-yon-man-en-de-su) = This hotel is forty thousand yen for one night.
  • 号室 (gō-shi-tsu) = room number
  • 何号室 (nan-gō-shi-tsu) = what room number?
  • 朝食 (chō-sho-ku) = breakfast
  • 朝食は済ませたの?(chō-sho-ku-wa-su-ma-se-ta-no) = Have you had breakfast? ("The act of dealing with breakfast. is it true?")
  • 朝食をありがとう。(chō-sho-ku-wo-a-ri-ga-tō) = Thank you for the breakfast.
  • 彼女は毎年夏を北海道で過ごす。(ka-no-jo-wa-mai-to-shi-na-tsu-wo-ho-kka-i-dō-de-su-go-su) = She spends every summer in Hokkaido.
  • 私たちは週末を横浜で過ごします。(wa-ta-shi-ta-chi-wa-shū-ma-tsu-wo-yo-ko-ha-ma-de-su-go-shi-ma-su) = We are going to spend the weekend in Yokohama.
  • どうぞごゆっくりお過ごしくださいませ。(dō-zo-go-yu-kku-ri-wo-su-go-shi-ku-da-sai-ma-se) = Please enjoy your stay. ("Please spend your time slowly.")
  • パーティーで楽しく過ごした (pā-tī-de-ta-no-shi-ku-su-go-shi-ta) = I had fun at the party.
  • 海外で休暇を過ごした。(kai-gai-de-kyū-ka-wo-su-go-shi-ta) = I spent my vacation abroad

Lesson 3[]

  • 夫はタオルで体を拭いた。(o-tto-wa-ta-o-ru-de-ka-ra-da-wo-fu-i-ta) = My husband dried his body with a towel.
  • テーブルを拭いてください。(tē-bu-ru-wo-fu-i-te-ku-da-sai) = Please wipe off the table.
  • 家具のほこりを拭いてくれる。(ka-gu-no-ho-ko-ri-wo-fu-i-te-ku-re-ru) = Could you dust the furniture?
  • タオルで顔を拭きなさい。(ta-o-ru-de-ka-o-wo-fu-ki-na-sai) = Dry your face with a towel.
  • 昼食 (chū-sho-ku) = lunch
  • 宿泊 (shu-ku-ha-ku) = hotel
  • 宿泊料 (shu-ku-ha-ku-ryō) = hotel charges
  • 宿泊先 (shu-ku-ha-ku-sa-ki) = a place to stay / where to stay / hotel
  • 宿泊先は決まりましたか? (shu-ku-ha-ku-sa-ki-wa-ki-ma-ri-ma-shi-ta-ka) = Have you decided upon where to stay?

  • 彼女は今、昼食を取りに外に出ている。(ka-no-jo-wa-i-ma-chū-sho-ku-wo-to-ri-ni-ho-ka-ni-de-te-i-ru) = She is out now getting lunch.

Lesson 4[]

  • フロント (fu-ron-to) = front desk
  • チェックアウト (che-kku-a-u-to) = check-out
  • 夕食 (yū-sho-ku) = dinner
  • 彼は夕食の準備に忙しい。(ka-re-wa-yū-sho-ku-no-jum-bi-ni-i-so-ga-shī) = He is busy preparing dinner. ("準備" here means "preparation / readyness")
  • いつも夕食を済ませてから風呂に入る。(i-tsu-mo-yū-sho-ku-wo-su-ma-se-te-ka-ra-fu-ro-ni-hai-ru) = I always take a bath after having dinner. ("...I enter the bathroom.")
  • 金庫 (kin-ko) = safe / vault ("money garage")
  • 貴重品 (ki-chō-hin) = valuables
  • 貴重品はフロントにお預けください。(ki-chō-hin-wa-fu-ron-to-ni-o-a-zu-ke-ku-da-sai) = Please leave your valuables at the front desk.
  • 私は貴重品をいつもある所にしまっている。(wa-ta-shi-wa-ki-chō-hin-wo-i-tsu-mo-a-ru-to-ko-ro-ni-shi-ma-tte-i-ru) = I always keep my valuables in a certain place.
  • 貴重品は金庫に預けてある。(ki-chō-hin-wa-kin-ko-ni-a-zu-ke-te-a-ru) = My valuables are kept in a safe.
