Restaurant is the eighteenth skill (assuming read left to right) in the Japanese language course. It has six lessons and teaches some vocabulary that would be helpful when eating out at a restaurant, such as adjectives to describe food or larger numbers.

Grammar Notes[]

This, that and the other thing[]

Similar to the general pronouns we learned a few skills ago, you can say "this thing", "that thing", "that thing over there" or "which thing?". These words come before the thing they modify:

  • この本 = this book
  • あのレストラン = that restaurant over there

Where it happens[]

The particle で indicates either a) the place where something happens (having the equivalent meaning in English of "at" or "in") or b) the way in which or the item with which something is done (having the English equivalent of "with" or "by").

Adjectives[]

Japanese has two sets of adjectives, い-adjectives and な-adjectives. This skill teaches い-adjectives, which all end in い. They are pretty simple: you can put them before the noun they're attached to or put them after, and they will look the same in both forms:

  • 高いケーキ = an expensive cake
  • ステーキ冷たいです = The steak is cold.
