Position is the twentieth skill (assuming read left to right) in the Japanese language course. It has seven lessons and teaches how to say where something is in relation to other things.

Position[]

When saying where something is positioned in Japanese, you use the particle の after the item you're referencing, then the postposition followed by に:

  • 本は猫の上にあります = The book is on top of the cat.

Lessons[]

Lesson 1[]

  • 右 (mi-gi) = right (みぎ)
  • 左 (hi-da-ri) = left (ひだり)
  • 上 (u-e) = up/above (うえ)
  • の上です (no-u-e-desu) = I am on top of (のうえです)
  • 下 (shi-ta) = down, under (した)

Lesson 2[]

  • 本 (ho-n) = book/books (ほん)
  • 外 (so-to) = outside (そと)
  • 間 (ai-da) = between (あいだ)
  • 中 (na-ka) = inside (なか)
  • ちょっと (cho-tto) = a little, a little bit
  • 買います (ka-i-ma-su) = I buy (かいます)
  • 買いました (ka-i-ma-shi-ta) = I bought (かいました)
  • 買いませんでした (ka-i-ma-sen-de-shi-ta) = I did not buy (かいませんでした)

Lesson 3[]

  • 隣 (to-na-ri) = next door/adjacent to (となり)
  • 横 (yo-ko) = next to, beside (よこ)
  • 前 (ma-e) = in front of (まえ)
  • 後ろ (u-shi-ro) = behind (うしろ)
  • たくさん (ta-ku-sa-n) = a lot

Lesson 4[]

  • 大きい (oo-kii) = big (おおきい)
  • 小さい (chii-sai) = small (ちいさい)
  • 冊 (sa-tsu) = counter for bound/wrapped objects (さつ)
  • 本が七冊 (hon-ga-nana-satsu) = seven books (ほんがななさつ)
  • 棚 (ta-na) = shelf (たな)
  • 本棚 (hon-da-na) = bookshelf (ほんだな)
  • ベッド (be-ddo) = bed
  • うちの (u-chi-no) = our

Lesson 5[]

  • 隅 (su-mi) = corner (すみ)
  • 片隅 (ka-ta-su-mi) = (in the) corner (かたすみ)
  • 長い (na-gai) = long (ながい)
  • 布団 (fu-ton) = futon (ふとん)

Lesson 6[]

  • 新しい (a-ta-ra-shii) = new (あたらしい)
  • 古い (fu-rui) = old (objects, not people) (ふるい)
  • 低い (hi-ku-i) = low (ひくい)
  • テレビ (te-re-bi) = television/TV

Lesson 7[]

  • 鏡 (ka-ga-mi) = mirror (かがみ)
  • 冷蔵庫 (rei-zou-ko) = refrigerator (れいぞうこ)
