- 日の出 = sunrise
- 日没 = sunset
- 昇る = to rise
- 朝日 = the morning sun
- 差し込む = to shine in
- その部屋には朝日が差し込んだ = The morning sun shone into that room.
- 東の空に朝日が昇った = The morning sun rose in the eastern sky. [Japanese often uses 朝日 for the rising sun]
- 太陽は東から昇る = The sun rises in the east.
- 今日の東京の日没は午後六時です = The sunset in Tokyo today will be at six P.M.

- 夕日 = the evening sun
- 夕日が沈んでいく = The evening sun is setting. [Japanese often uses 夕日 for setting sun]

- 眺める = to watch
- 夕焼け = sunset
- 西の空がきれいに夕焼けしている = The western sky is glowing beautifully. [The western sky has a beautiful sunset]
- 輝く = to light up [with happiness]
- 喜びで彼の頬は輝いた = His cheeks lit up with joy.
- 彼の目は興奮で輝いていた = His eyes were glittering with excitement.
- 輝く = to sparkle.
- 海が日の光で輝いていた = The sea was sparkling in the sunlight.
- でこぼこ = bumpy
- その道はでこぼこだった = The road was bumpy.
- 表面 = surface ひょうめん
- 月の表面はでこぼこしている = The surface of the moon is bumpy.
- この車ならでこぼこ道でも大丈夫です = This car is okay even on bumpy roads. [If it's this car, even bumpy roads are okay.]
- 真っ赤 = crimson [bright red]

- 洞窟の中は真っ暗だった = It was pitch-black inside the cave. *
- 洞窟の中は暗くて恐ろしかった. = The inside of the cave was dark and terrifying. *
- この洞窟はコウモリでいっぱいだ. = This cave is filled with bats. *
- 真っ青 = ghastly pale
- 彼の顔は真っ青だった = His face was ghastly pale. *
- いとこは寒さで真っ青になっていた。= My cousin had turned completely pale from the cold. *
- 彼女はその知らせを聞いて真っ青になった。= She turned completely pale after hearing the news. *
