Lesson 1[]

  • 煙 (ke-mu-ri) = smoke
  • 煙突 (en-to-tsu) = chimney
  • 煙突から煙が出ている。(en-to-tsu-ka-ra-ke-mu-ri-ga-de-te-i-ru) = Smoke is coming from the chimney.
  • 影 (ka-ge) = shadow (Hokage 火影, means 'Fire Shadow'. As in "the Land of Fire's Shadow".)
  • 煙突が地面に長い影を落としていた。(en-to-tsu-ga-ji-men-ni-na-gai-ka-ge-wo-o-to-shi-te-i-ta) = The chimney cast a long shadow on the ground.
  • 戦争が世界経済に暗い影を落としている。(sen-sō-ga-se-kai-kei-zai-ni-ku-rai-ka-ge-wo-o-to-shi-te-i-ru) = The war is casting a dark shadow over the world economy.
  • 刺されました。(sa-sa-re-ma-shi-ta) = I got stung. [also, 'bitten, pricked, stabbed']
  • 彼はハチに刺された。(ka-re-wa-ha-chi-ni-sa-sa-re-ta) = He got stung by a bee. ("I was stung at a bee.")
  • 私は背中から包丁で刺されていた。(wa-ta-shi-wa-se-na-ka-ka-ra-hō-chō-de-sa-sa-re-te-i-ta) = I was stabbed from behind with a kitchen knife. ("I from my back with a kitchen knife I was stabbed.")
  • 性格 (sei-ka-ku) = personality / character / nature
  • 彼女は明るい性格だ。(ka-no-jo-wa-a-ka-rui-sei-ka-ku-da) = She has a cheerful personality.
  • 彼は性格的に優しい。(ka-re-wa-sei-ka-ku-te-ki-ni-ya-sa-shī) = He is kind in terms of personality. ("He, personality-wise, is kind." or "He, in a way that concerns personality, is kind.")
  • 台所は魚を焼く煙でもうもうとしていた。(dai-do-ko-ro-wa-sa-ka-na-wo-ya-ku-ke-mu-ri-de-mō-mō-to-shi-te-i-ta) = The kitchen was smoky from grilling the fish.
  • 工場の煙突から煙がもうもうと出ていた。(kō-jō-no-en-to-tsu-ka-ra-ke-mu-ri-ga-mō-mō-to-de-te-i-ta) = Thick smoke was coming from the factory chimney.

Lesson 2[]

  • 穴 (a-na) = hole
  • 掘る (ho-ru) = to dig
  • 地面に深い穴を掘りました。(ji-men-ni-fu-kai-a-na-wo-ho-ri-ma-shi-ta) = I dug a deep hole in the ground. ("The ground, at which, I dug a deep hole.")
  • 罠 (wa-na) = trap
  • 罠だ!(wa-na-da) = It's a trap!
  • キツネは足が罠にかかった。(ki-tsu-ne-wa-a-shi-ga-wa-na-ni-ka-ka-tta) = The fox got its foot caught in a trap. ("...got its foot caught at a trap.")
  • 森林 (shin-rin) = forest
  • 森林の中で道に迷った。(shin-rin-no-na-ka-de-mi-chi-ni-ma-yo-tta) = I got lost inside the forest. ("The middle of the forest, at which, I lost at my way.")
  • 森林火災が発生した。(shin-rin-ka-sai-ga-ha-ssei-shi-ta) = A forest fire broke out. ("A forest fire occurred / took place.")
  • 世界中で森林破壊が進んでいる。(se-kai-ju-u-de-shin-rin-ha-kai-ga-su-sun-de-i-ru) = The destruction of forests is continuing around the world. ("Around the world, forest destruction is evolving / progressing.")

Lesson 3[]

  • 滝 (ta-ki) = waterfall
  • 滝のように汗が流れた。(ta-ki-no-yō-ni-a-se-ga-na-ga-re-ta) = I sweated like a waterfall. ("Like a waterfall, sweat flowed.")
  • 汗が滝のように流れた。(a-se-ga-ta-ki-no-yō-ni-na-ga-re-ta) = I sweated like a waterfall. ("Sweat, like a waterfall, it flowed.")
  • 根 (ne) = root
  • それは根も葉もない噂だ。(so-re-wa-ne-mo-ha-mo-nai-u-wa-sa-da) = It's a baseless rumor. ("That is a rumour that neither has roots nor has leaves.")
  • バラ (ba-ra) = rose [the flower]
  • 父は庭にバラを植えた。(chi-chi-wa-ni-wa-ni-ba-ra-wo-u-e-ta) = My father planted roses in the garden. ("...at the garden.")
  • 芝生 (shi-ba-fu) = lawn / grass
  • 芝生に水をやりました。(shi-ba-fu-ni-mi-zu-wo-ya-ri-ma-shi-ta) = I watered the lawn. ("I performed/acted upon the water at the lawn.")
  • 手を下ろしてください。(te-wo-o-ro-shi-te-ku-da-sai) = Please put your hands down. [This Kanji (下) is closest to the Chinese meaning 'down/below/termination']
  • 彼女はその包みを床に下ろした。(ka-no-jo-wa-so-no-tsu-tsu-mi-wo-yu-ka-ni-o-ro-shi-ta) = She put down the package on the floor.

Lesson 4[]

  • 棒 () = Bō / stick [Ninja Turtle Donatello's weapon is the Bō, although the word can also mean a 'stick, staff or pole'.]
  • この棒は曲がらない。(ko-no-bō-wa-ma-ga-ra-nai) = This stick won't bend.
  • 木の棒を見つけた。(ki-no-bō-wo-mi-tsu-ke-ta) = I found a wooden stick. ("I found wood's stick.")
  • 誰かドアを叩いている。(da-re-ka-do-a-wo-ta-tai-te-i-ru) = Someone is knocking on the door. [also, '...is beating against... .']
  • 首相の政策は新聞でひどく叩かれた。(shu-shō-no-sei-sa-ku-wa-shim-bun-de-hi-do-ku-ta-ta-ka-re-ta) = The prime minister's policies were harshly attacked in the newspapers. ("... policies were beaten against.")
  • 彼女は手を叩いて喜んだ。(ka-no-jo-wa-te-wo-ta-tai-te-yo-ro-kon-da) = She rejoiced by clapping her hands. ("She was happy while beating her hands.")
  • 彼女は肩に棒を担いでいた。(ka-no-jo-wa-ka-ta-ni-bō-wo-ka-tsui-de-i-ta) = She was carrying a pole on her shoulder. ("She was carrying a Bou shoulder-wise [assuming 肩に].")
  • 彼は娘を肩に担いでいる。(ka-re-wa-mu-su-me-wo-ka-ta-ni-ka-tsui-de-i-ru) = He is carrying his daughter on his shoulder. ("He is carrying [...] shoulder-wise.")
  • その兵士は肩に銃を担いだ。(so-no-hei-shi-wa-ka-ta-ni-jū-wo-ka-tsui-da) = The soldier carried a gun on her shoulder.
  • 彼は国を追われた。(ka-re-wa-ku-ni-wo-o-wa-re-ta) = He was expelled from the country.
  • 我々は犯人を追った。(wa-re-wa-re-wa-han-nin-wo-o-tta) = We chased the criminal.
  • 締め切りに追われて仕事をしている。(shi-me-ki-ri-ni-o-wa-re-te-shi-go-to-wo-shi-te-i-ru) = I am working under the pressure of a deadline. ("I am being chased by the deadline." or "I am working while being chased deadline-wise.")

Lesson 5[]

  • 僕は心の底から彼を愛している。(bo-ku-wa-ko-ko-ro-no-so-ko-ka-ra-ka-re-wo-ai-shi-te-i-ru) = I love him from the bottom of my heart.
  • 船は海の底に沈んだ。(fu-ne-wa-u-mi-no-so-ko-ni-shi-zun-da) = The ship sank to the bottom of the ocean. ("The ship sank bottom-of-the-sea-wise.")
  • 木は水に沈まない。(ki-wa-mi-zu-ni-shi-zu-ma-nai) = Wood does not sink in water.
  • 太陽は西に沈む。(tai-you-wa-ni-shi-ni-shi-zu-mu) = The sun sets in the west. ("The Sun sets west-wise.")
  • 狩り (ka-ri) = the act of hunting
  • 姉はウサギ狩りに出かけた。(a-ne-wa-u-sa-gi-ka-ri-ni-de-ka-ke-ta) = My older sister went out rabbit hunting.
