Home 1 is the fourteenth skill (assuming read left to right) in the Japanese language course. It has six lessons and teaches some words for common household items and rooms in order to describe locations and how to count things.

Grammar Notes[]

あります vs. います[]

Both of these mean "there is/are". The difference is that あります is always used for inanimate (non-living) things, while います is used for animate (living) things.

Counters[]

Japanese uses counters alongside their nouns and the number. The counter word differs depending on the noun being counted; this skill introduces 羽 which is used for birds and rabbits. You'll use the following formula to use them:

  • Counted noun + が + Number + Counter
    • 鳥が三羽 = three birds

[]

We learned in the past skill that に indicates when something happens. It is also used to describe the location where something happens:

  • トイレがあります = There is a bathroom in the house.
