Lesson 1[]

  • 贈り物 (o-ku-ri-mo-no) = gift
  • 息子が誕生日の贈り物をくれた。(mu-su-ko-ga-tan-jō-bi-no-o-ku-ri-mo-no-wo-ku-re-ta) = My son gave me a birthday present.
  • 母への贈り物を探しています。(ha-ha-e-no-o-ku-ri-mo-no-wo-sa-ga-shi-te-i-ma-su) = I am looking for a gift for my mother.
  • ...を贈った (...-wo-o-ku-tta) = I gave him ...
  • ...を喜びました (...-wo-yo-ro-ko-bi-ma-shi-ta) = She was happy with ...
  • 彼女は贈り物を喜びました。(ka-no-jo-wa-o-ku-ri-mo-no-wo-yo-ro-ko-bi-ma-shi-ta) = She was happy with the gift.
  • 喜ぶでしょう (yo-ro-ko-bu-de-shō) = He will probably be happy.
  • 喜んで (yo-ro-kon-de) = I'd love to. / With pleasure.
  • 祝い (i-wa-i) = celebration
  • ...を祝いました (...-wo-i-wa-i-ma-shi-ta) = I celebrated
  • 私たちは娘の誕生を祝いました。(wa-ta-shi-ta-chi-wa-mu-su-me-no-tan-jō-wo-i-wa-i-ma-shi-ta) = We celebrated the birth of our daughter.

Lesson 2[]

  • 式 (shi-ki) = ceremony
  • 行事 (ryō-ji) = event
  • 素敵な (su-te-ki-na) = lovely
  • 父は素敵な腕時計をしています。(chi-chi-wa-su-te-ki-na-u-de-do-kei-wo-shi-te-i-ma-su) = My father is wearing a nice watch. ("My father is doing a nice watch.")
  • 花火 (ha-na-bi) = fireworks ("flower of fire / flower fire")
  • 花火は美しかったです。(ha-na-bi-wa-u-tsu-ku-shi-ka-tta-de-su) = The fireworks were beautiful.
  • 明日行われる (shi-ta-o-ko-na-wa-re-ru) = it will be held tomorrow
  • 昨日行われた (ki-nō-o-ko-na-wa-re-ta) = it was held yesterday
  • 行われます (o-ko-na-wa-re-ma-su) = it will be held
  • 葬式は十時から行われます。(sō-shi-ki-wa-jū-to-ki-ka-ra-o-ko-na-wa-re-ma-su) = The funeral will be held starting at ten o 'clock.

Lesson 3[]

  • 招待 (shō-tai) = invitation
  • ご招待いただき、ありがとうございます。(go-shō-ta-i-i-ta-da-ki-a-ri-ga-tō-go-za-i-ma-su) = Thank you very much for inviting me. ("The act of receiving an invitation, thank you very much (for that).")
  • 彼を招待しましょう。(ka-re-wo-shō-tai-shi-ma-shō) = Let 's invite him.
  • 彼は私をコンサートに招待してくれました。(ka-re-wa-wa-ta-shi-wo-kon-sā-to-ni-shō-tai-shi-te-ku-re-ma-shi-ta) = He invited me to the concert (as a favour).
  • よい旅を!(yoi-ta-bi-wo) = Have a nice trip!
  • 良い / よい (yoi) = good
  • 良いお年を!(yoi-o-to-shi-wo) = Have a good new year!
  • 彼はよい教師になるだろう。(ka-re-wa-yoi-kyō-shi-ni-na-ru-da-rō) = He will make a good teacher.
  • 客を迎えた (kya-ku-wo-mu-ka-e-ta) = I welcomed guests.
  • 姉が迎えに来てくれました。(a-ne-ga-mu-ka-e-ni-ki-te-ku-re-ma-shi-ta) = My older sister came to get me.
  • 私は京都駅までお迎えに参ります。(wa-ta-shi-wa-kyō-to-e-ki-ma-de-o-mu-ka-e-ni-mai-ri-ma-su) = I will come to meet you at Kyoto Station. ("I will come uptill Kyōto Station at your welcome.")
  • 彼女は駅に彼を迎えに行きます。(ka-no-jo-wa-e-ki-ni-ka-re-wo-mu-ka-e-ni-i-ki-ma-su) = She will go to meet him at the station. ("She will go at the meeting of him at the station.") [Note 彼を迎え when 彼の迎え could equally have been used.]

Lesson 4[]

  • 日常 (ni-chi-jō) = daily / mundane / common
  • 国旗 (ko-kki) = national flag
  • 出来事 (de-ki-go-to) = event / occurrence / incident
  • 出来事は二年前に起こった。(de-ki-go-to-wa-ni-to-shi-ma-e-ni-o-ko-tta) = The event took place two years ago.
  • 開催される (kai-sai-sa-re-ru) = it will be held
  • コンサートは来年の春に開催される。(kon-sā-to-wa-rai-nen-no-ha-ru-ni-kai-sai-sa-re-ru) = The concert will be held next spring.
  • 恐ろしい (o-so-ro-shī) = dreadful / terrible
  • 私は字が恐ろしく下手だ。(wa-ta-shi-wa-ji-ga-o-so-ro-shi-ku-he-ta-da) = My handwriting is awfully bad.

Lesson 5[]

  • 祝日 (shu-ku-ji-tsu) = holiday
  • 今日は国民の祝日です。(kyō-wa-ko-ku-min-no-shu-ku-ji-tsu-de-su) = Today is a national holiday / citizen's holiday.
  • 雰囲気 (fun-i-ki) = mood / atmosphere / aura
  • 雰囲気が明るくなった。(fun-i-ki-ga-a-ka-ru-ku-na-tta) = The mood lightened up.
  • 飾られていた (wa-ka-za-ra-re-te-i-ta) = it was decorated
  • 飾った (wo-ka-za-tta) = it was decorated
  • 彼女の部屋には大きな絵が飾ってあった。(ka-no-jo-no-he-ya-ni-wa-ō-ki-na-e-ga-ka-za-tte-a-tta) = There was a big picture on display in her room.
  • 家庭 (ka-tei) = family
  • 彼は仕事のために家庭を犠牲にした。(ka-re-wa-shi-go-to-no-ta-me-ni-ka-tei-wo-gi-sei-ni-shi-ta) = He sacrificed his family for his work.
