Lessons[]

Lesson 1[]

  • 津波 (tsu-na-mi) = tsunami, waves ("harbour wave")
  • 災害 (sai-gai) = disasters
  • 備えて (so-na-e-te) = prepare for  そなえて
  • 備えた (so-na-e-ta) = have prepared, pictures, picture

Lesson 2[]

  • 嵐 (a-ra-shi) = storm, storms, stormy
  • 洪水 (kō-zui) = flood, with water
  • 来ない (ko-nai) = not to come
  • 地方 (chi-hō) = region, area
  • 大被害 (dai-hi-gai) = a lot of damage
  • 被害 (hi-gai) = damage, harm
  • 被害を受けなかった (hi-gai-wo-u-ke-na-ka-tta) = it did not take any damage
  • 被害が出ました (hi-gai-ga-de-ma-shi-ta) = damage was resulted / was caused
  • 彼女が死んだ夜は嵐でした (ka-no-jo-ga-shin-da-yo-ru-wa-a-ra-shi-de-shi-ta) = It was the stormy night she died.

Lesson 3[]

  • 伴う (to-mo-na-u) = to entail, involve, involves
  • 困った (ko-mat-ta) = was at a loss, was inconvenienced
  • 困る (ko-ma-ru) = to be inconvenient
  • 電話がないと困る (den-wa-ga-nai-to-ko-ma-ru) = With the phone not existing, it is inconvenient.
  • 破壊 (ha-kai) = destroy, destruction, broke
  • 破壊された (ha-kai-sa-re-ta) = it was destroyed
  • 犠牲 (gi-sei) = victim, sacrifices
  • 犠牲者 (gi-sei-sha) = victim [from Lesson: Home 3]
  • Note: 犠牲 means ‘victim’; 犠牲者 also means ‘victim’. It turns out 犠牲 is simply an abbreviation[1] for 犠牲者. That's how both words can mean the same thing.

Lesson 4[]

  • 一人残らず (hi-to-ri-no-ko-ra-zu) = all people without exception
  • 消防車 (shō-bō-sha) = fire truck / fire engine
  • 奪われました (u-ba-wa-re-ma-shi-ta) = it was robbed
  • 奪われた (u-ba-wa-re-ta) = it was robbed うばわれた 
  • 避難させた (hi-nan-sa-se-ta) = we were evacuated
  • 避難した (hi-nan-shi-ta) = we evacuated
  • [奪った, 避難所] うばわ

Lesson 5[]

  • 停電 (tei-den) = power outage
  • 突然の停電 (to-tsu-zen-no-tei-den) = a sudden power outage
  • 困った (ko-ma-tta) = I was inconvenienced
  • 消防士 (shō-bō-shi) = firefighter
  • ...になりたがっている (...-ni-na-ri-ta-ga-tte-i-ru) = I want to become ...
  • 明かり (a-ka-ri) = light / illumination
  • 明かりがついている (a-ka-ri-ga-tsu-i-te-i-ru) = the light is on
  • 明かりがついた (a-ka-ri-ga-tsu-i-ta) = the light went on
  • ...を防ぎます (...-wo-fu-se-gi-ma-su) = it blocks against ...
  • 防げたはずだ (fu-se-ge-ta-ha-zu-da) = it could have been blocked / prevented
  • 広がった (hi-ro-ga-tta) = it unfolded / spread across
  • 火事の広がるのを防ぐことができなかった (ka-ji-no-hi-ro-ga-ru-no-wo-fu-se-gu-ko-to-ga-de-ki-na-ka-tta) = they were unable to prevent the spreading of the fire
  • 消える (ki-e-ru) = to disappear
  • 消えた (ki-e-ta) = it has disappeared
  • 火を消した (hi-wo-ke-shi-ta) = I put out the fire

Lesson 6[]

  • 消防署 (shō-bō-sho) = fire station
  • 鳴っている (na-tte-i-ru) = it is ringing
  • 電話が鳴っていいる (den-wa-ga-na-tte-i-ru) = the phone is ringing
  • ガタガタ鳴った (ga-ta-ga-ta-na-tta) = it chattered
  • 寒さで歯がガタガタ鳴った (sa-me-sa-de-ha-ga-ga-ta-ga-ta-na-tta) = my teeth chattered in the cold
  • ...が発生した (...-ga-ha-ssei-shi-ta) = ... occured / took place
  • 警報 (kei-hō) = warning / alarm
  • 火災 (ka-sai) = fire disaster / conflagration / fire [災 meaning 'disaster / calamity']
  • ろうそく (rō-so-ku) = candle
  • 停電に備えて (tei-den-ni-so-na-e-te) = in the case of a power cut
  • ろうそくが消えそうだ (rō-so-ku-ga-ki-e-sō-da) = The candles are almost out.
  • 「鳴る, 鳴らなかった」
