Negation is the 18th skill in the High Valyrian language course. It has 7 lessons.

Grammar Notes[]

Unlike present in English, when using the negative form, we use the present tense of the subjunctive mode followed by the word daor (no/not).

Examples

  • Gerpī ipradan : I am eating fruit
  • Gerpī ipradon daor: I am not eating fruit.

Unlike indicative, the present subjunctive forms don't change depending on the stem, and it is similar to every regular verb.

Now, we will show the correct form of a regular a-stem verb in present simple, subjunctive form.

Present simple: subjunctive mode
I You(sing.) he/she/it We You(pl.) They
To love

(jorrāelagon)

jorrāelon jorrāelō jorrāelos jorrāeloty jorrāelōt jorrāelosy

We will also see the verb sagon, an irregular verb.

I You(sing.) he/she/it We You(pl.) They
To be

(sagon)

ikson iksō iksos soty iksōt sosy

As a final tip, e-stem verbs (verbs ending in -egon) change slightly when in subjunctive, and switch the final e into an i.

  • Urnen : I see
  • Urnion daor : I do not see

In the same way, o-stem verbs and u-stem verbs change the o and u for a v.

  • Merbun : I am hungry
  • Merbvon daor : I am not hungry
