Family is the 11th skill in the High Valyrian Language course. It has 5 lessons.
Grammar Notes[]
In the family skill we learn words to describe siblings, aunts and uncles and cousins. Cross cousins are either your mother's brother's children or your father's sister's children. Parallel cousins are either your mother's sister's children or your father's brother's children.
Like in some languages, like japanese, there are different words for older brother and sisters(lēkia and mandia) and younger brothers and sisters(valonqar and hāedar). The same goes for the brothers of the mother and the sisters of the father.
Due to incest culture in Old Valyria (usually the older brother and sister in the important families are married together), the words for a mother's sister and mother are the same (Muña). The same goes for a father and a father's brother (kepa). Due to this, the older son of my father's brother would be my lēkia, which also means older brother. This creates an extremely bizarre cultural shock, so to avoid it, in the app we only use the word muña for mother and kepa for father, and they specify what aunt or uncle is in each. If they dont, you can use either.
