Grammar Notes[]
Adjektivendungen (Adjective Endings)[]
Up until now, adjectives in German have always been in the predicative (i.e. right after the verb sein), and have always stayed the same:
- Der Hut ist schwarz. = The hat is black.
But if you want to put it in front of the adjective like in English, it is modified slightly. There are two possibilities: if the word that comes before it is of the der type (like dieser and welcher) or of the ein type (like the possessives). Here is the table for the der type:
Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural |
---|---|---|---|---|
Nominative | der blaue Hut | die weiße Vase | das grüne Puzzle | die roten T-Shirts |
Accusative | den blauen Hut | die weiße Vase | das grüne Puzzle | die roten T-Shirts |
Dative | dem blauen Hut | der weißen Vase | dem grünen Puzzle | den roten T-Shirts |
And this table is for the ein type:
Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural |
---|---|---|---|---|
Nominative | mein blauer Hut | meine weiße Vase | mein grünes Puzzle | meine roten T-Shirts |
Accusative | meinen blauen Hut | meine weiße Vase | mein grünes Puzzle | meine roten T-Shirts |
Dative | meinem blauen Hut | meiner weißen Vase | meinem grünen Puzzle | meinen roten T-Shirts |
