Questions is the tenth skill in the German language tree. It has five lessons and teaches some more places and occupations while reviewing questions and teaching formal ways of talking to people!

Sie you!

We mentioned in an earlier unit that du was a fairly familiar way to refer to someone. The more formal way to talk to someone you don't know is using Sie (which is always capitalized).

• Lebst du hier? -> Leben Sie hier?

Verbs conjugated for Sie usually end in -en and for the verb "to be", the conjugation is Sie sind.

Frau, Frau, Frau

Frau in German is pretty multipurpose. We've already used it as "woman" or "wife", but in this skill we learn it's also the form of address for "Mrs." or "Ms."

Keine Ahnung!

Kein literally means "none" or "not one," but in German, it just replaces "nicht" in sentences where there is a noun object:

• ich spreche English. -> ich spreche kein English.
• ich bin Professor. -> ich bin kein Professor.

Lesson 2

• Freut mich = nice to meet you!
• Schön, dich kennenzulernen = nice to meet you!

• Sie heißen = your name is

Lesson 3

• ich spreche = I speak
• Sie sprechen = you speak
• Englisch = English
• Deutsch = German
• kein = none (see above)

Lesson 4

• ich lebe = I live
• du lebst = you live
• Sie leben = you live
• in = in
• der Schüler = student (m.)
• die Schülerin = student (f.)
• der Polizist = police officer (m.)
• die Polizistin = police officer (f.)

Lesson 5

• Russland = Russia
• der Anwalt = lawyer (m.)
• die Anwältin = lawyer (f.)
• Schweden = Sweden
• der Künstler = artist (m.)
• die Künstlerin = artist (f.)
