Moving is the forty-ninth skill in the language tree for German. It has a total of five lessons and teaches a couple more separable verbs and verbs that use the dative case. All this while talking about moving and thanking people for helping you!

Grammar Notes[]

Dative Refresher[]

Remember that some verbs tend to use the dative case exclusively (like helfen, "to help" and wehtun, "to hurt") and some (like verbs of giving such as schenken, "to gift") have both kinds of objects:

  • Schenkst du uns Kinokarten? = Are you gifting us movie tickets?
  • Ich helfe meinen Eltern morgen umziehen. = I'm helping my parents move tomorrow.
  • Mir tun die Hände weh. = My hands hurt. (literally "The hands do harm/pain to me.")

Hier, da, dort, überall![]

Da and dort in German both mean "there" but da tends to refer to things that are relatively close and dort to things that are relatively far away. You can also add drüben to both of them, which is like saying "over there" in English:

  • Die Äpfel da drüben sind gelb. = The apples over there [probably in the same room as me] are yellow.
