Gems (formerly lingots) are virtual currency on Duolingo used in the shop. They are used to reward people for various accomplishments related to language learning and translation.

Lingot to Gem Converter

Purpose

On PC, Lingots can be used to buy:

• Bonus Skills

• Power-Ups

• Streak Freeze for 100

• Legendary challenge for 10

• Double or Nothing for 5

On iOS, Android, and PC, Gems can be used to buy or reward people:

• Refill for 350

ㅤㅤ•ㅤDuring the middle of the lesson 450

• Freeze for 200

• Legendary test (0 With Super) for 100

• Animated Status for 500

• League Repair for 2000

• Double or Nothing for 50

• Timer Boost for 450

ㅤㅤ•ㅤDepending on the value pack 1800 or 4500

• Timed Challenge (0 with Super) for 100

Earning Lingots or Gems

Lingots or Gems can be earned in several ways:

• Play every day to get lingots and gems
• Inviting friends: if your friend accepts, you both receive 1 lingot.
• Maintaining a streak: every ten days of a streak, earn an increasing number of lingots. This feature only works for some users.
• Being in the three first places of a League.
• Earned for every achievement you gain, varies depending on the level.
• Achieving a point of a chest at Duolingo path update. (5 Gems)

Exchange Rate

• A Complete Exchange Rate from Lingots to Gems is not fixed due to the significant difference between the two currencies.

• During A/B testing that transitions Lingots into Gems with the robot animation, an approximate conversion rate of 20 Gems per Lingot has been observed.
  • After a certain amount of Lingots presumably around the 1000 mark they start to lose value during the conversion to Gems to prevent an inflation like problem.
• The maximum amount of gems obtainable from this conversion is 12000.
