Gems can be earned in several ways:
- Inviting friends: if your friend accepts, you both receive 1 gem.
- Maintaining a streak: every ten days of a streak, earn an increasing number of gems. This feature only works for some users.
- Being in the three first places of a League.
- Earned for every achievement you gain, varies depending on the level.
- Achieving a point of a chest at Duolingo path update. (5 Gems)

Lingot to Gem Converter
- A Complete Exchange Rate from Lingots to Gems was not fixed due to the significant difference between the two currencies.
- During A/B testing that transitions Lingots into Gems with the robot animation, an approximate conversion rate of 20 Gems per Lingot has been observed.
- After a certain amount of Lingots presumably around the 1000 mark they start to lose value during the conversion to Gems to prevent an inflation like problem.
- The maximum amount of gems obtainable from this conversion was 12000. That means that you can potentially have UNLIMITED 💎 gems now.
