Duolingo's Energy system is the planned replacement for Hearts;[1] testing for Energy began in July 3, 2025. Users start with 25 Energy units per day, with 1 unit of Energy being lost for a correct answer or 1-2 unit(s) for an incorrect answer.[2] When a user gets multiple answers in a row right, Energy increases.[3]

The Energy system was created to reward learners for getting things right instead of penalizing some learners for getting something wrong. Duolingo states that 'Energy is being actively tested and will improve over time.'[3]

Unlike with the hearts system, unlimited energy through a Super or Max subscription cannot be turned off by the user.[citation needed]

Reception[]

Many of those who were opted-in to the energy system have expressed frustration, preferring the older heart system. Criticism focuses on how the energy system limits the learning of free (non-Super/Max) users, as well as how there is no way to opt-out manually.

Among non-Super/Max users, the change to the new energy system is being received as a "cash grab" and excessive gamification of the app mechanics, prioritizing revenue over learning, as the penalizations occur even when you get the answers right.

Many have reported leaving in favor of other less gamified language learning apps in what is nowadays a highly competitive market.
