Questions 1 is the seventh (assuming read left to right) skill of the Dutch language tree. It has two lessons. These lessons introduce the learner of Dutch to a set of open-ended questions, as well as how to frame them in Dutch.

Grammar Notes[]

In both Dutch and English, there are two types of questions. These two types are open-ended and closed-ended. Open-ended questions are questions that can have a variety of answers, while closed-ended questions can have either "yes" or "no." Questions 2 teaches open-ended questions.

Closed-ended Questions[]

Closed-ended questions are more difficult in English than in Dutch. In English, closed-ended questions are either formed with the auxiliary verb "to do" or they have an inversion of verb and subject. In Dutch, only the latter exists.

If je or jij is the subject of the verb, then the "t" drops out of the verb. This does not occur for any other form of the verb.

  • Do I have it? -> Heb ik het?
  • Is it dry? -> Is het droog?
  • Do you speak Dutch? -> Spreek je Nederlands?
