Diminutives is the sixty-second (assuming read left to right) skill in the Dutch language tree. It contains four lessons. The skill teaches the use and formation of the diminutives, words that can express cuteness or smallness (more on that later).

Tips and notes[]

Shape and Formation[]

Diminutives are much more common in Dutch than in English. They all end in -je, but commonly have something before them:

  • -tje, which is added to nouns ending in vowels, w's, or nouns that end in a long vowel followed by l, n or r.
  • -etje, which is added to nouns ending in short vowels followed by a single l, n, ng, m or r.
  • -kje, which is added to nouns ending in -ing.
  • -pje, which is added to nouns ending in -m.

Use[]

Diminutives can be used to express any or all of the following in Dutch:

  • Express how small something is:
    • kat, "cat"+-je = katje, "kitten."
  • Express mistrust or contempt
    • De kaas heeft een vreemd smaakje. = The cheese has an odd taste.
  • Express cuteness
    • Wat een zoet belletje! = "What a sweet little bell!"
  • Express something positive
    • Lekker wijntje! = "Delicious wine!"

They also can sometimes be used to make whole new words that have different meanings:

  • de telefoon = telephone
    • het telefoontje = phone call
