Duo Keyshauna Renee Lingo, also known as Duo, is the official mascot of Duolingo. He is a green owl, similar to the spectacled owl species in the real world and is meant to symbolize knowledge, wisdom, and learning. When you're using Duolingo, he can at times serve as a coach to motivate users to achieve higher learning goals, and can also instruct users on several aspects of the Duolingo website. As you're doing lessons, he will sometimes pop up to do things like giving encouragement.

In French, Duo is a chouette, which is an owl without ear tufts (aigrettes in French), and Duo has them. This is because the smaller chouette owl, not the larger hibou owl, was a symbol of Minerva-Athena, goddess of knowledge, wisdom, and learning. The same applies in Italian: Duo is a smaller civetta (chouette) owl, not a larger gufo (hibou) owl.

On February 11, 2025, Duolingo's social media accounts announced his death reporting that authorities were investigating the cause and that the Duolingo team was cooperating fully. The next day, it was revealed that Duo was killed in a hit-and-run accident from a speeding Tesla Cybertruck in a parking lot. He was the first Duolingo character to die. In a comment, the account says “Authorities are looking into a Canadian rapper.”

Later, his death was confirmed to be fake and was a test.
